About the Event

Dekathon 2.0

Dekathon 2023 is a 3-day Indo-Malaysian design hackathon jointly organized by St. Thomas College of Engineering and Technology, Chengannur, in association with Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia, APJ Abdul Kalam Kerala Technological University and Kerala Startup Mission to be held from 22-24 November, 2023. The hackathon is themed "Trash to Tech: Igniting Innovation in Solid Waste Management" after Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 6 and 11.
Solid waste management is a complex problem that affects every corner of the planet. It's not just about disposing of waste responsibly but also about finding value in what others might discard. During this hackathon, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Learn: Gain insights into the pressing challenges of solid waste management through workshops and expert talks.
  • Innovate: Collaborate with like-minded individuals to brainstorm and develop creative solutions.
  • Pitch: Create compelling pitch decks that showcase your innovative ideas.
  • Compete: Present your pitch decks to a panel of judges for a chance to win prizes and recognition.
Experts relating to the respective field will be available during the hackathon and the participants can seek the help and guidance of them to develop their idea and prepare a pitch deck presentation.

Scope of Dekathon 2023

Dekathon 2.0 offers an exciting opportunity for innovators and problem solvers to tackle the critical issue of waste management. Participants will be challenged to develop creative solutions that address various aspects of solid waste, from reduction and recycling to efficient collection and disposal. Throughout the hackathon, participants will have access to valuable resources, mentorship, and workshops to help them refine their ideas. The ultimate goal is to foster sustainable and impactful solutions that contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
Winners will be determined based on their ability to convey their ideas effectively through pitch deck presentations before a distinguished judging panel, showcasing not only the innovation but also the feasibility and potential for real-world implementation of their solutions. This hackathon offers a platform for participants to make a tangible impact on one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Terms and Conditions

  • Teams consisting of undergraduate and/or postgraduate, diploma students from India and Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia (UiTM) of the age of 18 or above are eligible to participate in this competition.
  • A team must be comprised of not more than 3 members.
  • Team members should be exclusive of students who are not organizers, volunteers, judges, sponsors, or in any other privileged position at the event.
  • Teams are free to obtain general, competition related advise and support from organizers, volunteers, sponsors and experts.
  • All segments of the hackathon scope should be done during the hackathon.
  • The participants must agree to this Terms of the hackathon.

Dekathon 2023

Judging Criteria

The final judging will be based on the pitch deck presentations of your ideas. Your pitch should reflect your innovative solution's viability and its potential to become an entrepreneurial venture. The judging criteria will include:
  • Innovation (30%): How creative and unique is your solution in addressing solid waste management challenges?
  • Feasibility (25%): Is your solution practical and achievable in real-world scenarios?
  • Impact (25%): What positive environmental or societal impact can your solution deliver?
  • Entrepreneurial Potential (20%): Can your solution be developed into a sustainable business or entrepreneurial venture?

  • Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges selected by the organizing committee. Judges may be employees of the STCET, UiTM, external, may or may not be listed individually on the hackathon website, and may change before or during the judging period.

Dekathon 2023

Post Dekathon 2.0

The winning teams from India will grab an opportunity for a maximum of 2-week visit to UiTM. They will get an internship in the Makers Lab at UiTM and the opportunity to meet top researchers and entrepreneurs at the university.
The winning team from Malaysia will grab an opportunity for a one week internship at Super Fab Lab, KSUM.
The winning team will also get financial and technical assistance to develop their idea into a marketable product.
